I’ve been a collage artist for almost as long as I can remember. I began experimenting with the medium in high school, creating elaborate journals and “fill the well” books in my high school art classes and in my free time. When I was on a break from college in 2011, I began experimenting with collage again after my creative process seemed stagnated and I was unsure of what to do next. Creating those first two collages inspired me so much that I’ve never looked back. I now work almost exclusively in collage, continuing to expand on the idea of the process and what it means to me.
In 2018, I saw a SoulCollage® workshop being offered at a local business. I had never heard of SoulCollage® before but the description made it sound like fun. The workshop would entail collaging and creating our own oracle cards. I have always loved tarot and oracle decks and combining that with collage sounded awesome! At the time, I was thinking about creating my own oracle deck and I thought that this would be a place I could learn more about doing that.
The instructor for that class was Kara-Leigh Huse, who is now my good friend. She walked us through the basics; how to find imagery that resonated with us and gave us a reaction, how to create a card with one particular energy, and how to use “I Am The One Who….” to get to know the card. Instantly I knew that this SoulCollage® process was something so special. Even though I had dabbled in all kinds of new age-type stuff, I had never encountered a practice that felt so real, so magical, and so me! I loved how tactile the cards were, such a great size 5”x8”. Sealing them in the little plastic envelopes when they were finished felt so satisfying. I was in love with the process and my new cards. I remember making two cards that day, which are still some of my favorite cards in my deck. When I got home from that workshop I immediately bought cardmaking supplies and started making cards with abandon. I didn’t know much more about SoulCollage® other than that I loved making cards and using the cards as a tool for self-discovery.
Shortly after that first workshop. I found out that my favorite meditation guru, Jessica Snow, was teaming up with her friend Somsara to create Art X Magic, their SoulCollage® workshop series and offering. I was so excited to take their workshops which I knew were going to be next level. From Jess and Somsara I learned SO much about SoulCollage®. I traveled up to LA for their workshops, took dozens on Zoom, and spent so much time deepening my understanding of the magic of SoulCollage®, learning about my deck, and learning about myself. I made cards that reflected every facet of my inner and outer world. I created cards for my dreams, for archetypes that resonate with me, and for my real life and spiritual guides. I learned about working with shadow and how SoulCollage® can help with integration and healing. With their guidance and through exploring on my own, I began to receive deep insights and healing from my deck. I was seeing tangible results in my life from the work that I was doing in SoulCollage®. I felt excited to spend time with my deck, making it grow, and doing readings to gain the deck’s wisdom and insights for me.
I was having so much fun with SoulCollage®, I knew that I wanted to get certified to facilitate my own workshops. In late 2022, I finally took the plunge and got my facilitator certification. From my instructor, Mariabruna Sirabella, I learned even more about the important process and fruitful work that SoulCollage® is. I connected with so many other like-minded facilitator candidates, all passionate about sharing SoulCollage® with the world. I received my facilitator certification in December of 2022 and now teach SoulCollage® to others with my unique perspective on the process.
SoulCollage® is so special to me and I can’t count all the benefits I’ve received from it. I’ve healed traumas from the past, learned more about myself than ever before, felt closer to ancestors, family, friends, and guides, discovered the power of my dreams and how to use archetypes, and even tangibly changed my relationship with codependency, sobriety, anxiety, and depression. I know this process is powerful. I am so excited to share SoulCollage® with you. In my workshops, I encourage participants to get weird, get a little punk rock, embrace our pop culture icons, furry friends, and even the chaotic nature of the universe itself to create cards that excite, resonate, and teach. I can confidently say that after my cat, my SoulCollage® deck is the thing I’d save if my house caught on fire.
I hope you feel my passion for this work and I hope hearing about my journey encourages you to take a workshop and try the process out. Working with images is easy and abundant, no artistic experience is necessary. All you have to do is come with an open mind, an open heart, scissors, and a gluestick.
