What is SoulCollage®? SoulCollage® is an intuitive collage process of making your own oracle deck of individual cards that each describe a unique facet of your soul. To read more about what SoulCollage® is, click here or check out my blog, Stardust Experiment.
What supplies do I need to do SoulCollage®? To do SoulCollage®, you need images, which you can find from magazines, junk mail, or printed from the computer. You need cards to collage on, traditionally the cards are 5”x8”, but you can choose your own size that is not too small or too large. You need scissors or an xacto knife and a glue stick. You can also buy plastic sleeves to protect your SoulCollage® cards once they are finished. To buy SoulCollage® supplies from WOSC, click here.
Can I draw or paint on my SoulCollage® cards? Some people choose to paint or draw on their SoulCollage® cards. I prefer to keep mine strictly collaged because I find the process most beneficial when I’m using just found imagery. That being said, you might find it beneficial to alter your images using paint or another medium.
Where do you find images for the SoulCollage® process? You can find images for SoulCollage® from a variety of places. Magazines, old books, and junk mail are the easiest to find and have the most abundantly available imagery. You can also print images from online for cards. On some cards, you may want to use photographs. There are many websites and books that provide copyright free images for you to use on your SoulCollage® cards.
Is SoulCollage® the same as vision boarding? SoulCollage® involves collaging found imagery, so some people think it’s similar to making vision boards. However, the two are very different. Vision boarding is more about looking for things in the outside world that you want to manifest into your life. It’s very future-focused and usually involves finding images of things you want to bring in to your life. SoulCollage® on the other hand, is all about looking inward. The images you find for SoulCollage® cards are ones that resonate with you on an intuitive, personal level and help to tell the story of your unique soul. SoulCollage® involves discovering, experimenting, and tending to all the parts that already exist inside of you.
How are SoulCollage® cards different from tarot cards or oracle cards? The main difference between SoulCollage® cards and tarot or oracle cards is that SoulCollage® cards are made by you, for you. Oracle decks and tarot cards are mass produced and in the case of tarot cards, follow a set of suits that are the same no matter what kind of deck you buy. SoulCollage® cards are intended to be used only by you and the cards you create reflect your unique soul. Tarot cards and oracle decks, while beautiful and useful, are more one-size-fits-all, where SoulCollage® decks are bespoke objects.
Do I have to be an artist to do SoulCollage®? You do not have to be an artist to do SoulCollage® and I think everyone should be doing it. While SoulCollage® is creative, there is no pressure for your cards to be any thing other than reflections of your unique soul essence. They are all beautiful, but they need not be Works of Art. Everyone, at any artistic skill level, can participate in SoulCollage®.
How many cards are in a SoulCollage® deck? There is no set number of cards for a SoulCollage® deck and some participants have decks with hundreds of cards. To do a reading, it is recommended that you have at least 4 cards.
What are the main activities of SoulCollage®? The main activities of SoulCollage® include creating cards, completing the “I Am One Who…” exercise, journaling from the cards, and consulting the cards in readings.
Can I share my SoulCollage® cards? Ultimately it is up to you whether or not you want to share your SoulCollage cards with others. I am pretty open when it comes to my deck, however, I do assert that while questions are okay, personal comments about the cards should be kept to yourself. It is up to each participant whether or not they want to share their cards and it is important that you allow those who want to share the floor to do so without making any comments or judgements about what is on their cards. While you may see an image that you feel strongly about, if it is on someone else’s card, it’s best to keep the comment to yourself or journal about it.
Can I use my SoulCollage® cards to make an oracle deck to sell? SoulCollage® cards are just for you and it is not okay to reproduce or sell the cards. Each deck is personal and unique, created solely for your use. I like to think of it as the ultimate self-care ritual in that it is just for you.
Can I use my SoulCollage® cards to do card readings for others? It is not recommended to use your cards to do readings for others. Your SoulCollage® deck is a reflection of your unique soul essence and therefore is not applicable to others. While all of our decks contain archetypes and universal themes, each of these is reflected through our experience, which makes them unique to us. See my point above about the ultimate self-care ritual.
What about the copyright and SoulCollage®? It is important that you are complying fully with copyright law when creating your SoulCollage® cards. Again, the cards are not meant to be reproduced or sold. Doing so can violate copyright law because of the found imagery. Be careful when posting images of your SoulCollage® cards because that may also be in violation. Creating the cards for personal use is not in violation of copyright laws.
How do I use my SoulCollage® cards? After you create your SoulCollage® cards, the real fun begins by using them! Seena Frost says, “making SoulCollage® cards and not using them, is like making a meal and not eating it.” SoulCollage® cards can be used as journal prompts, in readings, and for self-discovery work. For ideas on what you can do with your cards, check out the Stardust Experiment blog.
Is SoulCollage® therapy? SoulCollage® is an educational, creative tool and is not in itself therapy. SoulCollage can provide deep healing and give insight into your inner world. SoulCollage® cards can be used in therapeutic contexts and in conjunction with licensed professionals. I am not a therapist nor licensed mental health worker.
Why is SoulCollage® trademarked? SoulCollage® is trademarked in the USA and abroad in order to assure that everyone is able to experience the process as it was originally intended. We wanted to ensure high standards for the brand by providing excellent training for SoulCollage® Facilitators, who are the only ones who have permission to use the trademark in their workshops after completing a SoulCollage® Facilitator Training.
Where did SoulCollage® begin? Seena B. Frost founded SoulCollage® in the 1980s while working on developing new therapeutic techniques for a “Human Capacities” program. To read more about the history of SoulCollage®, click here.
What resources are available if I want to learn more about SoulCollage®? You can find many resources for learning about SoulCollage® on the SoulCollage® website, as well as from my favorite facilitators, Art X Magic.
